Sustainability

As part of its ongoing commitment towards a more sustainable sport, the Herculis EBS Meeting joined the Athletics for a Better World Standard program launched by World Athletics in 2023. The event was awarded the Silver Label, recognizing its tangible commitment to a sustainable future. This distinction reflects rigorous efforts in environmental responsibility and marks an initial acknowledgment of the meeting’s ongoing initiatives. Below are some key actions implemented this year:

Ambitions:

  • To share knowledge, experiences, and commitment to sustainable development
  • To ensure that all communications reflect the organisation’s vision and objectives regarding sustainable development
  • To share sustainability initiatives and tips on social media platforms

Carbon Consumption:

  • The meeting partnered with the specialised company Gienov to measure its carbon footprint. Thanks to the tools developed, the event is now able to assess its greenhouse gas emissions across the three scopes: direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions from energy use (Scope 2), and other indirect emissions (Scope 3).
  • This approach helps identify the most relevant areas for action in order to develop a decarbonisation strategy tailored to the specific nature of the event.

Local Environment and Air Quality:

  • The organisation has played a pioneering role in air quality monitoring by installing the very first air quality sensor in a stadium worldwide at the Louis II Stadium.
  • The data collected from this sensor is now being analysed and integrated into the broader planning and organizational considerations of the event.

Access and Transportation:

  • The event collaborates with local authorities to ensure appropriate and sustainable transportation arrangements:
    • On the day of the event, Monaco’s bus network is free of charge, encouraging spectators to use public transport
    • A partnership with the SNCF and local authorities ensures sufficient capacity and frequency of public transport during peak hours before and after the event (two additional train services are provided after the event)
    • MonaBike stations and standard bicycle parking are available right next to the stadium to encourage arrivals by bike
    • A limited number of on-site parking spaces encourages spectators to choose public or active transport
  • Event staff are accommodated at the Columbus Hotel in Monaco, within walking distance of the stadium, eliminating unnecessary daily travel
  • Walkability to key locations is prioritised (the warm-up track is located directly opposite the main track, allowing athletes to walk between facilities)
  • The organisation favours local suppliers located just minutes away by car whenever possible (meals are provided by local restaurants, several of which are within walking distance of the stadium)
    • 73.52% of suppliers are located within a 25 km radius of the event
  • At least 65% of participants use environmentally responsible means of transportation

Catering and Accommodation:

  • VIP meals are provided by the Fairmont Monte Carlo, a Green Globe-certified establishment that promotes local products and minimizes food waste
  • Volunteer meals are prepared by A Roca, a local restaurant committed to combating food waste
  • Volunteer breakfasts come from a nearby Monegasque supermarket

Waste Management:

  • Everything is done reduce waste production and promote reusable alternatives whenever possible
  • Water fountains have been installed for professional athletes (inside the stadium) and amateur participants (in the pedestrian area outside the stadium) to reduce single-use plastic
  • A partnership with the Société Monégasque d’Assainissement provides special overnight waste collection immediately after the event, ensuring all waste is properly sorted while minimizing disruption to the surrounding community

Local Community Engagement:

  • The traditional 1000m races bring together young and old each year in a festive and educational atmosphere
  • Local athletics clubs are invited to participate, strengthening the connection between amateur and elite sport

Diversity and Equality:

  • We are proud to welcome volunteers of all ages—from young club athletes getting their first exposure to the professional athletics world, to experienced technical officials. This multigenerational approach fosters mentoring opportunities, as our seasoned members pass on their knowledge to younger participants
  • We offer flexible roles tailored to different age groups, skill levels, and areas of interest
  • We work closely with Stade Louis II to ensure our venue meets accessibility standards, enabling everyone to take part
